People Don't Remember Products. They Remember Experiences.

Have you ever wondered why some events stay with you for years while others are forgotten almost as soon as they end?

That realization hit me while visiting the FIFA World Cup 2026™ Fan Festival at Lemon Hill Park in Philadelphia.
Building Excitement Before the Event Even Begins
The FIFA Fan Festival is the only free public fan festival connected to the tournament, running for 39 days from June 11 through July 19.
What fascinated me wasn't just the soccer.
It was how the organizers built anticipation long before visitors entered the venue.
Branded floor decals stretched throughout the surrounding neighborhood, guiding residents and tourists toward the festival. Directional signage, advertising, sponsor activations, and conversations happening throughout Philadelphia created an atmosphere that made people want to be there.
Even people who weren't soccer fans wanted to experience it.
Why?
Because we all crave community.
We want to feel included. We want to feel connected. We want to be part of something larger than ourselves.
Psychologists tell us that anticipating a rewarding experience triggers a surge of dopamine in the brain's reward center. That anticipation doesn't just make us feel good- it motivates us to participate and often makes the experience itself even more enjoyable.
The Philadelphia FIFA Fan Festival understood this perfectly.
Great Branding Doesn't Interrupt the Experience. It Becomes Part of It.
One activation that immediately caught my attention was a foosball table featuring subtle Pennsylvania branding.
It wasn't intrusive.
It wasn't a sales pitch.
It simply became part of the fun.
While people played, laughed, competed, and connected, they were also interacting with the Pennsylvania brand.
That's powerful because memories and emotions often become connected to the brands that help create them.
Another activation had fans waiting in line for hours.
Bank of America invited attendees to build their own personalized bracelet.
The bracelet wasn't the attraction.
Creating it was.
That simple activity transformed visitors from spectators into participants.
A Simple Fan Became a Lasting Memory
My nephew visited the Home Depot activation where children could color a hand fan.
He proudly decorated his fan with USA colors and a green-and-white soccer ball before posing in front of the Philadelphia FIFA 2026™ grass wall featuring the Home Depot logo.
He wasn't simply handed a promotional item.
He participated.
He created something.
He smiled.
He posed for a picture.
That photo will be shared with family and friends, becoming another reminder of the experience.
That's exactly what successful event marketing should accomplish.
A Tiny Teddy Bear Still Lives on My Jewelry Box
This experience reminded me of my own childhood.
I was about 10 years old when I went on a school trip to Linvilla Orchards with my grandmother, Gram.
While we were there, I spotted a tiny teddy bear with a branded ribbon around its neck.
I had to have it.
Gram smiled, pulled out her wallet, and gave me the money so I could purchase it myself.
Today, decades later, that little teddy bear still sits on my jewelry box.
The ribbon has faded.
The bear is dusty.
Its little arms are brittle.
But I will never throw it away.
Because it isn't about the teddy bear.
It's about Gram.
Every time I see it, I'm reminded of the love she showed me and the special day we spent together before she passed away in 2012.
